Start with the median, then look past it

Half of the 12,946 fence contractors on Google have 16 reviews or fewer. That is the single most useful number in this report because it tells you where the middle of your competition sits. A company with 40 reviews is already ahead of most of the country.

That is not the same as winning the map pack. Google shows three businesses for "fence company near me", and in a real metro those three almost always come from the top tenth. The 90th percentile is 113 reviews. The 75th is 47. So the honest target for a company that wants the first three spots is somewhere between those two numbers, not the median.

The bottom is wide. 11.1% of fence contractors have no reviews at all, 40.5% have fewer than 10, and 60.2% have fewer than 25. Only 11.6% have passed 100 and 0.9% have passed 500. The mean of 46.6 is pulled up by that small group of large multi-crew operations. Compare yourself to the percentiles, not the mean.

Why fence companies lag on review count

A plumber sees a customer every day. A fence company sees one customer per job, and a job can take a week. Fewer transactions means fewer chances to ask, which is why the median here is lower than in daily-service trades. A crew that finishes three fences a week and asks every customer on install day can add 100 reviews in a year and move from the median to the top tenth.

Ratings do not separate you

The average rating is 4.6 stars and 74.5% of fence contractors are at 4.5 or above. 40.8% hold a perfect 5.0, most of them with a handful of reviews. A 4.8 does not make a fence company stand out. The count and the recency do. A homeowner comparing three quotes trusts 4.7 stars with 180 reviews over 5.0 with 9.

Where the rating matters is the floor. 12.4% of fence contractors sit below 4.0, and below 4.0 most shoppers skip the listing without opening it. 7.8% have no rating because they have no reviews. A fence company below 4.0 usually got there from a few scheduling disputes during a spring backlog, and the fix is a volume of new reviews, not arguing with old ones.

The website gap

22.8% of fence contractors list no website on their profile. 77.2% do. The companies with a website have a median of 23 reviews. The companies without one have 3.

This report does not claim the website produces the reviews. Owners who take the business seriously tend to do both. But the gap is the clearest marker in the data of who will and will not compete for the map pack. In fence work the site does a specific job: it is where the homeowner looks between getting your number and signing your estimate. A gallery, per-foot ranges and a tap-to-call button do more there than anywhere else.

Hours, photos and contact details

46.3% of fence contractors list no hours at all. To a homeowner shopping on a Saturday morning, no hours reads as closed. Only 23.2% show Saturday hours and 9.6% show Sunday, which is odd for a trade whose customers are at home and looking at the yard on the weekend. 4.2% claim 24 hours, which few fence companies can honor.

Photos are nearly universal: 96.7% of listings have at least one. The question is which one. A finished cedar fence with the house behind it earns clicks. A truck in a parking lot does not. Only 24% publish an email address, so a listed email is still a small point of difference for property managers and builders who prefer to write.

What to do with this

  1. Find your state in the tables below and note three numbers: the median, the 75th percentile and the no-website share. That is your local field.
  2. Set a review target at your state's 75th percentile for this year and the 90th for next. Ask on install day, every job, with the crew lead doing the asking. The reviews guide has the script.
  3. If you have no website listed, fix that this month. Fence styles, per-foot ranges, a gallery, a phone button. See the website guide.
  4. Publish hours, including Saturday if you answer on Saturday. Add every fence style you build as a service on the profile. The profile guide covers the fields.
  5. Put your own numbers into the missed-call calculator. Fence tickets are large enough that two unreturned calls a week is a real cost.
  6. If you want any of it done, the free 14-day trial covers reviews, the profile, the website and the rest. Text or call (385) 334-3643.

Method

This report aggregates 12,946 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for fence companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
